Obituary Assignment

Following a very moving interview I heard this week, I've asked students to write an Obituary that would suit the life they hope to lead. The woman I heard being interviewed, Roz Savage, had just recently published a book based on her experience rowing across the Atlantic Ocean.

Savage explains that she became motivated after she wrote herself two obituaries: one was based on the life she was leading, the other was based on the life she hoped to lead. When she looked at the results, she decided that she needed to make some changes in order ensure that she ended up living a life she wouldn't regret.

I told students that they should be envisioning a date for their obituaries many years in the future--2080 or so. Ideally, this will give them time to write about many accomplishments in terms of their careers, personal lives, sports, community service and other hobbies and interests.

A sample is included with the assignment.

Update For this Week/ Independent Assignment

Monday and Tuesday we had what I felt were very productive days.

On Monday, we wrote a sarcastic letter to someone or something that irritated us.

On Tuesday, we wrote a letter to our future selves. Both assignments were collected and will be graded.

All week we have been moving forward with our independent novels. It is really rewarding to see students not only reading but also enjoying books that they themselves selected. There is an assignment that has been given out in class but I will post a copy here shortly for home use.

It is my expectation that each student will bring his or her reading material to class each and every day until the Independent Novel unit is complete.

As always, post your questions and comments here.
